What Junk Removal Companies Won't Take (and Why)

A clear list of restricted items in Durham, NC — and what to do with each one instead.

Most junk removal companies in Durham — including Durham Junk Pros — can haul the vast majority of residential and commercial junk without issue. But there's a short list of items that can't legally travel in a standard junk removal truck. Understanding what's on that list and why saves you from a last-minute surprise on job day.

The reasons behind the restrictions aren't arbitrary. They fall into three categories: EPA federal law (refrigerants, certain chemicals), NC state hazardous waste rules (paints, motor oil, pesticides), and practical safety (propane, certain batteries). Here's the breakdown.

Items We Cannot Take — and What to Do Instead

Liquid Paint (Cans with Wet Paint Inside)

Latex and oil-based paint that's still liquid cannot go in a junk truck. The reason: liquid paint can leak, it's a solid waste hazard, and most disposal facilities won't accept it mixed with regular debris. What to do: Durham County's household hazardous waste drop-off accepts liquid paint. If you have many cans of usable paint, Habitat for Humanity's ReStore and local community exchanges often accept paint donations. Dried-out paint cans — where the paint inside is fully hardened — can go in regular trash and we can haul those.

Motor Oil and Automotive Fluids

Used motor oil, transmission fluid, coolant, and brake fluid are hazardous waste under NC state law. What to do: Autozone, O'Reilly Auto Parts, and Advance Auto locations throughout Durham accept used motor oil for recycling at no charge. Durham County's household hazardous waste program takes other automotive fluids.

Propane Tanks (Full or Partially Full)

Standard propane tanks — including grill tanks and camping canisters — can't ride in a junk truck due to explosion risk. Exception: completely empty, depressurized, and valve-removed propane canisters can be hauled as scrap metal. We'll assess this during the walk-through. What to do with full tanks: Blue Rhino and AmeriGas exchange programs accept tanks. Durham County's hazardous waste program takes tanks that can't be exchanged.

Pesticides and Herbicides

Lawn and garden chemicals, bug sprays in bulk, and concentrated pesticides are regulated hazardous waste in North Carolina. What to do: Durham County's household hazardous waste program accepts these. Check the schedule at dconc.gov for drop-off dates and locations.

Asbestos-Containing Materials (Confirmed or Suspected)

This restriction is firm and non-negotiable. Asbestos is a regulated hazardous material requiring licensed abatement and certified disposal. If your Durham renovation project turns up suspected asbestos in floor tiles (especially 9"x9" vinyl tiles common in homes built 1940–1980), popcorn ceilings, pipe wrap, or ceiling tiles — stop. We'll flag anything suspicious during our walk-through and refer you to a licensed abatement contractor.

Certain Batteries (Lithium, Wet-Cell)

Standard household AA/AAA/9V batteries we can take (they go to battery recycling). The problem items are large lithium battery packs (from e-bikes, power tools, and certain electronics) and old wet-cell lead-acid batteries from vehicles. What to do: Auto parts stores take lead-acid batteries. Home Depot and Best Buy locations take rechargeable battery packs.

Medical Waste and Sharps

Used needles, syringes, and medical waste require specialized disposal. What to do: CVS and Walgreens locations in Durham have sharps disposal programs. Durham County also operates medical waste disposal through public health resources.

Items That Might Surprise You — We DO Take These

A lot of people assume we can't take things we actually handle routinely:

Durham Household Hazardous Waste Resources

Durham County operates a household hazardous waste (HHW) program for items that can't go in regular trash or junk removal trucks. The HHW drop-off at 1833 Garrett Road in Durham accepts paint, motor oil, pesticides, propane tanks, and most other regulated household chemicals. Check the Durham County solid waste website for current hours and accepted materials — the program is free for Durham County residents.
